Dishes Coming Out Dirty? Why Your Dishwasher Is Not Cleaning
Dishes coming out dirty do not all point to the same problem. Food particles, greasy plates, an unopened detergent compartment and spots on otherwise clean glasses are different clues. Start by describing what remains on the dishes and whether the problem affects one rack or the whole load.
This guide covers general household dishwasher symptoms. Use the owner’s manual for the exact model before attempting maintenance.
Identify the cleaning pattern
Before changing several things at once, note the cycle, detergent and loading arrangement. A photo of the load and residue can be more useful than “it did not wash.” Compare a few items from each rack, and note whether the cycle finished normally.
- Food left on selected items: Look for nesting or blocked spray access.
- Grit across the load: Inspect the user-cleanable filter as directed in the manual.
- Detergent still in the dispenser: Check whether a large item blocked its lid; also report this symptom if the wash did not begin properly.
- Spots or a white film: Review detergent, water hardness and rinse-aid guidance. This is different from food remaining on plates.
Give water room to reach the dishes
Separate nested bowls and utensils, face soiled surfaces toward the spray and keep large pans away from the detergent dispenser. With the appliance stopped, check that tall items do not obstruct spray-arm movement. Use the loading diagram for your model rather than packing every available space.
If only the top rack is affected, note whether its height was recently changed. A technician can check the rack’s water-feed connection and circulation system if careful loading does not help.
Check the filter and accessible spray arms
Turn the appliance off, disconnect power and let hot components cool before inspecting inside. Remove and rinse a user-cleanable filter only as the manual directs, then lock it back into place. Avoid reaching blindly into areas that may contain broken glass. Do not run the dishwasher with its filter removed.
Inspect accessible spray openings for visible debris. Follow model-specific cleaning instructions; do not enlarge the openings or dismantle components beyond the maintenance steps in the manual.
Match detergent and cycle to the load
Use fresh automatic dishwasher detergent and the recommended amount. Hand dishwashing liquid can cause excessive foam and must not be substituted. Keep detergent dry before use and ensure the dispenser can open.
Choose a cycle intended for the soil level. A short cycle intended for lightly soiled dishes may not suit baked-on food. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for water supply temperature and rinse aid; do not raise household water-heater settings simply to experiment.
When cleaning problems need diagnosis
Arrange service if a correctly loaded dishwasher still leaves food after routine maintenance, if the wash action seems absent, or if a fault code interrupts the cycle. Possible areas for testing include filling, circulation, heating and detergent dispensing. No single dirty plate proves that the pump or heater has failed.
If dirty water remains in the tub, first read our dishwasher drainage guide. Report repeated standing water along with the cleaning problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I rewash dishes with visible food on them?
Yes. Do not treat a completed cycle as proof that visibly dirty dishes are ready to use. Wash them properly by a suitable method while you resolve the appliance problem.
Will adding more detergent help?
Not necessarily. Follow the detergent and dishwasher instructions for the load and water conditions. More detergent does not correct blocked spray, a closed dispenser or a circulation fault.
Does poor drying mean the dishwasher is not cleaning?
Not by itself. Judge cleaning by the residue left behind and drying by retained moisture. Tell the technician about both symptoms, but do not assume they share one cause.
