Dishwasher Leaking? Common Causes & What to Do First
A dishwasher leaking onto the floor should be stopped before another wash cycle. The puddle’s location is a clue, but water can travel beneath the appliance or along a cabinet before it becomes visible. Do not assume that a wet front corner proves the door seal is the only problem.
This guide covers general household dishwasher symptoms. Use the owner’s manual for the exact model before attempting maintenance.
What to do first when the dishwasher leaks
Stop using the dishwasher. If you can do so safely from a dry location, switch off its circuit breaker and close the accessible dishwasher water-supply valve. Do not touch a wet plug, outlet or electrical panel, or stand in water to reach a control. Keep away from wet electrical equipment and seek qualified help.
Once the area is safe, protect the floor and dry accessible water. Do not run another cycle just to reproduce the leak. If water continues to spread or you cannot safely isolate the supply, get prompt plumbing or emergency property assistance.
Where did you first notice water?
- At the door: Visible debris on the gasket, a damaged seal, loading interference or excess foam are possible causes.
- Underneath the machine: Supply or drain connections, internal seals and an overfill condition need consideration.
- Inside the sink cabinet: The dishwasher connection or other sink plumbing may be involved.
- After recent installation: Tell the installer about the leak; hose routing, connections and leveling deserve review.
Record where the first drops appeared and whether the appliance was filling, washing, draining or idle. Use observations you already have; do not reach beneath a running appliance to find the source.
Accessible checks with power and water off
When the tub has cooled, look for an item preventing the door from closing and inspect the visible door gasket for food, tears or displacement. Clean accessible gasket surfaces using the care method in your manual. Do not apply glue, sealant or an improvised replacement seal.
Check which detergent was used. Hand dish soap and other unsuitable products can create foam that escapes the tub. Follow your model’s instructions for accidental soap use; do not add chemicals or keep restarting a leaking machine.
Observe accessible hoses and the sink cabinet without disconnecting fittings. If locating the source requires removing panels or pulling out a built-in unit, leave that work to a qualified technician.
Why replacing the door gasket may not solve it
A leak can originate from a water connection, pump or sump seal, damaged component, or water-level problem. Water reaching the front can have started farther back. Diagnosis should establish the source and operating conditions before a repair is selected.
If substantial water remains inside after the cycle, see our dishwasher not draining guide. Standing water and an external leak can occur together, but they do not prove the same component has failed.
What to tell the technician
- Full model number and any warning code.
- Where the water first appeared and how much escaped.
- Whether it happened during operation or while idle.
- Any recent installation, plumbing work or detergent change.
- Photos taken safely before cleanup, including damage around cabinets.
Keep the appliance out of use until the leak source is corrected. Ask for the repair findings and any further steps needed for affected flooring or cabinets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a dishwasher with a small leak?
Avoid using it until the cause is corrected. A small visible puddle does not show how much water may have reached the cabinet or floor underneath.
Can too much foam cause leaking?
Yes. Incorrect detergent can produce excess suds. This is one possible cause, not a reason to dismiss a recurring leak as harmless.
Why does it leak when it is switched off?
A pressurized supply connection or inlet problem, or water from nearby plumbing, may be involved. Switching off electrical power does not shut off the water supply. Arrange diagnosis and isolate the water safely.
