Washing Machine Won’t Spin? Here’s Why and What to Do

Pulling laundry from the washing machine only to find it dripping wet is a classic sign that the spin cycle didn’t complete properly. A washing machine that won’t spin — or spins weakly — is one of the most common washer problems, but it has several distinct causes depending on the type of washer you have.

Here’s a systematic guide to diagnosing why your washer won’t spin and what to do about it.

Start Here: Check the Obvious

Before assuming something mechanical has failed, run through these quick checks:

✅ Is the load unbalanced?

An unbalanced load is the #1 cause of a washer stopping during the spin cycle. Modern washers detect imbalance and pause or slow the spin to prevent damage. Open the washer, redistribute the clothes evenly, and restart the spin.

✅ Is the washer overloaded?

Overfilling the washer prevents proper tumbling and can trigger the machine’s overload protection. Remove a few items and try again.

✅ Is the lid or door fully closed?

Washing machines won’t spin if the lid or door isn’t properly latched. Confirm it’s closed completely and restart.

✅ Did the cycle actually complete?

If you opened the washer mid-cycle, it may not have reached the spin phase. Run a full cycle from the start.

Cause #1: Lid Switch Failure (Top Load Washers)

Top load washers use a lid switch — a small safety device that tells the machine the lid is closed before allowing the spin cycle to start. When this switch fails, the washer will fill and agitate normally but won’t spin at all.

How to test: On most top load washers, you can manually press the lid switch (usually a small plastic button in the lid opening) while the machine is running. If the drum starts spinning when you press it, the switch has failed and needs replacement.

Lid switch replacement is a common, affordable repair.

Cause #2: Door Latch Failure (Front Load Washers)

Front load washers have a door latch mechanism that must engage before the spin cycle can operate. A damaged latch or a faulty door lock solenoid will prevent spinning.

Signs: The washer doesn’t spin, and you may see an error code related to the door (dE, Dr, or F-dL on various brands). The door may feel like it’s closed but isn’t registering as locked.

Fix: Door latch assembly replacement.

Cause #3: Worn or Broken Drive Belt

Many washers — particularly top load models — use a drive belt to connect the motor to the drum. When this belt stretches, cracks, or breaks, the motor runs but the drum doesn’t spin.

Signs: You can hear the motor humming but the drum doesn’t move or moves only slightly. You may smell burning rubber if the belt is slipping.

Fix: Drive belt replacement is a standard repair that a technician handles routinely.

Cause #4: Motor Coupling Failure (Top Load Washers)

The motor coupling is a small plastic or rubber component that connects the motor to the transmission on direct-drive washers (common in older Whirlpool and Maytag models). It’s designed to break if the washer becomes overloaded — to protect the motor and transmission.

Signs: Washer fills and agitates but doesn’t spin, or spins very weakly. There may be a burning plastic smell.

Fix: Motor coupling replacement is inexpensive and a common repair on direct-drive washers.

Cause #5: Shock Absorber or Suspension Rod Failure

Shock absorbers (front load) and suspension rods (top load) dampen drum movement during spin. When they wear out, the drum vibrates excessively, causing the machine to detect an “unbalanced load” and stop the spin — even when the load is actually balanced.

Signs: The washer always stops during spin and displays an unbalanced load error, even with well-distributed loads. Excessive vibration during any spin.

Fix: Shock absorber or suspension rod replacement. Usually all are replaced at the same time since they wear at similar rates.

Cause #6: Drain Pump Failure

Most washers must drain completely before entering the spin cycle. If the drain pump fails, water can’t be removed from the tub — and the washer won’t spin. You’ll typically have standing water in the drum at the end of the cycle.

Signs: Water remains in the drum at the end of the cycle. The washer may run through the spin phase but the drum stays still.

Fix: Drain pump replacement. Check the pump filter first — a clogged filter can prevent draining without requiring pump replacement.

Cause #7: Control Board or Motor Failure

If all mechanical components test fine but the washer still won’t spin, the issue may be electronic:

Control board failure: The board that controls the spin cycle function has developed a fault. Multiple functions may be affected.

Motor failure: The drive motor itself has burned out. The washer will be completely silent during the spin phase.

Both are more expensive repairs but are worth doing on washers less than 8 years old.

Error Codes for Spin Issues

Common error codes related to spin failure:

– Samsung: UE (unbalanced), E4 (door switch)

– LG: UE (unbalanced), dE (door error)

– Whirlpool/Maytag: F7 E1 (motor issue), Ld (long drain)

– GE: E3, E7 (motor or control)

– Bosch: E18 (drain error before spin)

Top Load vs Front Load: Key Differences

Top load washers: More commonly affected by lid switch, motor coupling, and drive belt issues.

Front load washers: More commonly affected by door latch, shock absorber, and drain pump issues.

Both types are vulnerable to load imbalance and control board failures.
