22E means the fresh-food compartment fan isn’t running as expected — almost always from ice buildup blocking the fan, a door that isn’t sealing, or a failed fan motor. (Some newer models display this as 22C.)

Samsung fridges track whether the fan inside the fresh-food compartment is actually turning. When it doesn’t get that confirmation for long enough, it throws 22E. You’ll usually notice the fridge side running warmer than usual while the freezer stays cold, sometimes with a faint knocking or scraping sound if a blocked fan blade is trying to spin against ice.

Common Causes

1. Ice buildup around the fan — usually from a door left slightly open or a weak door seal letting humid air in

2. Fan motor has failed and isn’t turning at all

3. Door not sealing fully — food containers or drawers blocking a full seal

4. Wiring or connector issue at the fan motor

5. Control board fault (less common, usually only after the fan itself checks out fine)

What You Can Check Yourself

1. Check every door and drawer — push each one until you hear the seal engage, and make sure nothing inside is blocking a full close. Wait a few minutes to see if the code clears.

2. Inspect the door gasket — run a hand around the full perimeter feeling for gaps or folds. A dollar bill test works too: close the door on it and see if it pulls out easily anywhere along the seal.

3. Listen for the fan — if you hear a rattling or grinding sound from inside the fresh-food section, ice is likely obstructing the blade.

4. Defrost if you suspect ice — unplug the fridge and prop the doors open for a few hours to let any hidden ice melt, then plug back in and monitor.

5. Don’t chip at visible ice with sharp tools — it’s easy to puncture a liner or coil this way.

If closing up the doors and a defrost cycle don’t clear 22E within a day, the fan motor itself has likely failed and needs replacement — that’s a job we’d recommend a technician handle, since it involves pulling the rear panel and testing the motor.

Quick Reference

| What does 22E mean? | Fresh-food compartment fan isn’t running |

| Is it the same as 22C? | Yes, same fault on newer displays |

| Related code | 21E is the same issue on the freezer side |

| Can I fix it myself? | Sometimes — door/seal issues, yes. A failed fan motor, usually not |

| Typical repair cost | Fan motor replacement is a moderate, single-visit repair |

| Is my food safe? | Check fridge-side temperature if the code has been active a while; move perishables to a cooler if it’s climbed above 40°F |
